QUICK ANSWER PDRN is a mixture of DNA fragments, traditionally sourced from purified fish-derived material, that has a longer history in medical and injectable research than in ordinary cosmetics. What is PDRN?
Polydeoxyribonucleotide, usually shortened to PDRN, describes relatively short chains of deoxyribonucleotides. In medical research it has been investigated as a biologically active material, often in relation to tissue repair and inflammatory signalling. Polynucleotides (PN) and PDRN are related terms, but they are not always interchangeable; molecular size, purity, source and formulation can differ substantially. [1,2]
In Korean skincare, PDRN is commonly marketed in serums, toners, creams, masks and ampoules. The label may refer to salmon-derived DNA fragments or to a plant-derived material marketed as “phyto-PDRN”. Consumers should not assume that a plant extract described with PDRN language has the same molecular composition or evidence base as purified fish-derived PDRN.
The most important distinction is route of delivery. Evidence from injections or wound-healing models cannot simply be transferred to a leave-on cosmetic. The skin barrier limits penetration of large, water-soluble molecules, and delivery depends on molecular size, vehicle and formulation technology.
How it may affect the skin
Proposed mechanisms include activation of adenosine A2A-receptor-related signalling, provision of nucleotide building blocks through salvage pathways, and modulation of inflammatory and extracellular-matrix pathways. Much of this mechanistic work comes from laboratory, animal, wound or injectable research rather than routine facial skincare. [2,3]
A 2026 study of one specific medium-length 0.1% PDRN eye-cream formulation included laboratory, ex vivo and a short split-face clinical component. It reported improvements in measured periocular outcomes over 28 days, but the formula was proprietary, the study was short and the findings do not validate every PDRN product on the market. [3]
A 2025 systematic review of aesthetic polynucleotide treatment found promising results but only nine low- or moderate-quality studies involving 219 participants, mostly using procedures rather than ordinary topical skincare. The authors called for higher-quality research and more standardised use. [1]

Frequently asked questions
Is PDRN vegan?
Traditional PDRN is often fish-derived and therefore not vegan. Some brands use “plant-derived PDRN” language, but these materials should be assessed separately and the evidence may not be equivalent.
Can PDRN replace retinol?
No. Retinoids have a much larger evidence base for photoageing. A PDRN product may be chosen as a gentler supporting product, but it is not an evidence-equivalent substitute.
How long does topical PDRN take to work?
There is no universal timeline. Hydration from the base may be noticeable quickly, while any change in texture or fine lines would require consistent use and depends on the exact formulation.
Can I use PDRN every day?
Many cosmetic formulas are designed for daily use, but follow the label and introduce gradually, especially if the product also contains retinol, acids or fragrance.
