Foam cleansers

Typically used at routine step 2.

A foam cleanser is the second cleanse: a water-based wash that clears whatever the oil step loosened. The variable that matters most is pH. Skin sits at roughly 4.7 to 5.5, and a strongly alkaline foam disturbs that balance, which is why low-pH formulas are the default recommendation for anyone whose skin feels tight after washing. Foam volume is a formulation choice, not a measure of cleaning power.

How we research foam cleansers

Nothing is published here yet. Every entry is compiled from manufacturer ingredient disclosures, published cosmetic science literature and UK retailer listings. We do not run clinical trials, and we do not publish a product until its formulation details have been checked against a source we can cite.

  • Formulation: INCI lists, key actives, fragrance and alcohol status where the brand discloses them.
  • Evidence: what the published research suggests for the key ingredients, and what it does not establish.
  • UK availability: retailer listings and prices, with the date each was last checked. Where a price is not recent enough to quote, we say “check latest price” instead of guessing.

Results from cosmetic products are formulation-dependent and vary between people. Read our review methodology, browse the ingredient explainers or compare options in the comparison tool.

Choosing foam cleansers

  • Tightness, squeakiness or stinging after cleansing means the formula is too stripping for you.
  • Low-pH gel and cream textures suit dry and sensitised skin better than high-foam surfactant blends.
  • One water-based cleanse at night is enough for most people; morning cleansing can often be gentler still.
