Essences

Typically used at routine step 4.

An essence is the step most often skipped and least often explained. It is a lightweight, water-rich layer with a higher concentration of functional ingredients than a toner but less than a serum — fermented filtrates, mucin, amino acids and humectants are common. The realistic benefit is cumulative surface hydration and a smoother base for what follows, rather than a targeted correction of one concern.

PDRN 100 Essence

A rich, milky essence using ginseng-derived plant PDRN alongside niacinamide, ceramides, panthenol and emollients. It provides a moisturising glow and may function more like an emulsion than a water-light essence.

How we research essences

We currently track 2 published products here. Every entry is compiled from manufacturer ingredient disclosures, published cosmetic science literature and UK retailer listings. We do not run clinical trials, and we do not publish a product until its formulation details have been checked against a source we can cite.

  • Formulation: INCI lists, key actives, fragrance and alcohol status where the brand discloses them.
  • Evidence: what the published research suggests for the key ingredients, and what it does not establish.
  • UK availability: retailer listings and prices, with the date each was last checked. Where a price is not recent enough to quote, we say “check latest price” instead of guessing.

Results from cosmetic products are formulation-dependent and vary between people. Read our review methodology, browse the ingredient explainers or compare options in the comparison tool.

Choosing essences

  • Add an essence when your routine is already stable and hydration is the gap.
  • It is not a substitute for a treatment serum if you have a specific concern.
  • Texture matters more than the marketing term; read what the layer actually is.
