What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid, also called hyaluronan, is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in skin and other tissues. It binds water and contributes to the extracellular environment. In cosmetics it may appear as hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, hydrolysed hyaluronic acid or cross-linked derivatives. [1]
Different molecular weights behave differently. Larger molecules mainly form a hydrating film at the surface, while smaller fragments may penetrate more deeply, although penetration and biological effects depend heavily on the formulation. Very low molecular weight is not automatically superior and may be more biologically active or irritating in some contexts.
Topical hyaluronic acid should be understood as a hydration ingredient, not as a topical equivalent of dermal filler. A serum can temporarily improve the appearance of fine dehydration lines, but it cannot recreate the structural volume achieved by an injection.
How it may affect the skin
Hyaluronic acid is hygroscopic, meaning it interacts strongly with water. In a cosmetic formula it can increase hydration in the stratum corneum and improve smoothness and suppleness. A moisturiser layered over a humectant can reduce water loss and provide a more comfortable finish. [1,2]
Reviews of topical HA products report generally good tolerability and improvements in hydration and signs of skin quality, but studies use varied molecular weights, concentrations and combination formulas. Therefore, the exact label percentage is less informative than the performance of the finished product. [1,2]
In very dry environments, a simple watery HA serum without emollients or occlusives may feel tight after it dries. This does not mean HA “pulls all water out of the skin”; it usually means the complete routine lacks sufficient moisturising and water-loss reduction.

Should hyaluronic acid go on wet skin?

Can I use it with retinol?
Yes. HA is commonly used to support hydration around retinoid use, though it cannot prevent all irritation.
