What are skincare peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Cosmetic peptides are often grouped as signal peptides, carrier peptides, enzyme-inhibiting peptides or neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides, but these categories describe proposed roles rather than guaranteed clinical performance. [1]

Examples include palmitoyl pentapeptides, copper-binding peptides and many proprietary sequences. Attaching a fatty chain can improve affinity for the skin, while encapsulation or delivery systems may improve stability. Nonetheless, the stratum corneum remains a significant barrier, and many peptides have poor passive penetration.

A peptide serum should therefore be evaluated as a finished product. The exact sequence, concentration, delivery system, stability and clinical testing matter more than the number of peptides listed.

How it may affect the skin

Some signal peptides are designed to mimic fragments of extracellular-matrix proteins and influence cell signalling associated with collagen or matrix production. Carrier peptides may bind trace elements such as copper, while other peptides are marketed to influence expression lines. [1,2]
